My name is Miguel, I had gastric bypass surgery 1 year ago and I lost 60 kg.

1- How did you hear about us?

I wanted to find on the internet several possibilities of clinics specializing in bariatric surgery, but the truth is that the first option that appeared was the Obesity Clinics website. I was very interested in the questionnaire of questions offered because they delved into aspects such as self-esteem, how to eat, etc … in short, things that you do not expect to find at first in this type of test on a website. I filled it in with total sincerity and very soon after (I think I remember that less than two hours), the clinic team (through Inma, my guardian angel) already contacted me by phone, offering me a very kind treatment (it is the main rule of the house), many explanations and something very important, at least for me, to be able to talk about you to you with other patients already operated that could explain better than anyone how everything had gone and how they felt, apart from reading the testimonies of other patients who had already started their new life.

2- Why did you choose to be treated in Obesity Clinics? What makes us different?

Having taken that first (and most difficult) step of getting in touch with the clinic, I wanted to make sure that, as far as possible, everything would be fine, or in other words, “that these people were trustworthy. To do this, I asked a great friend of mine, a doctor, for help and I told him what I was thinking. He asked me for a couple of days to investigate and try to find out as much as possible about the medical team at the clinic.
A short time later, this friend of mine literally said to me: “Miguel, look no further! I’ve been confirmed that the surgeon is a crack! ». That’s how he told me, and that’s how I transmit it.
That reassured me very much because a decision as important as going through an operating room requires putting yourself in the best possible hands. And I didn’t look anywhere else. I saw Dr. Ferrer’s extensive curriculum, the large number of operations he had already carried out… but, without a doubt, the opinion of another doctor who endorses his work was fundamental for me.
I really liked the fact that, parallel to everything that surgery is, they offered an accompaniment service with a nutritionist and a psychologist. My problem (I suppose that of many in this sense) was/is the fear that, in spite of the economic and physical effort, after a while everything would go back to normal (in other words, I don’t trust myself very much and my willpower goes where it needs to go…), so that the staff of the clinic will see you periodically after the operation is an important relief.

3- Broadly speaking, what physical and emotional problems caused obesity?

On a physical level, the problems of drowning, fatigue, tiredness were more than evident… everything that makes the daily routine become a small daily martyrdom (from fastening your shoes to moving in a shower). I’ve always liked sport and I had it completely abandoned because my eyelashes ended up hurting…
And, of course, the emotional problems associated with obesity are there: complex, shame… you try to cope, but almost the worst is what you think others are thinking about you…

4- What treatments did you try before the operation?

I suppose that as a great majority, I had tried different diets… that in my case they always lasted as long as my willpower lasted… and once I lost the strength, if I had lost 5 kgs I recovered 10… In the last years the abandonment in that sense had been great… I didn’t even want to go on a diet.

5- What led you to make the decision to have us operate on you?

My health problem: YES
Not being comfortable with myself…: YES
The security and experience transmitted to me by Dr. Ferrer and his team…: YES
Others: I was much more aware of my health problem after the first interview with Dr. Ferrer, two months before the intervention. My risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes… was very high and I had never thought about it in such a clear way as when the doctor explains it to you.

6- Regarding the quality of life with the operation: (comment what you want)

Do you enjoy the food? YES
Comfortable in public? In total comfort.
How do you feel about your day-to-day life? It is certainly an accumulation of positive sensations that I had almost forgotten.
Other comments: The support found in my family and friends has been basic to feel very accompanied in this way. That’s why self-esteem has risen many whole and has gradually assumed a situation of normality for food (although you should never relax in this aspect).

7- What changes have you experienced?

Psychologically: I feel that I have regained control over my diet. I insist, it is clear to me that one cannot relax, but I face the meals knowing that I decide what I eat and in what quantity. And the feeling of “winning” is fabulous because it’s the result of a mature decision, not the despair of seeing that you can’t stop (and the subsequent feeling of guilt). Evidently, you feel better about yourself.
On a physical level: Simply spectacular. I followed the advice of the medical team very closely and, from the very beginning, I started to take good daily walks (fundamental) so that, about two months after the operation, I could progressively start to do more exercise. I still have a lot to do, but I can tell you that even Sam, my dog, has noticed the change and is the fittest in the neighborhood. The results of the scale (old enemy) are evident in all sections: weight loss, recovery of muscle mass, percentage of body water … but that is data … for me, things as simple as stop sweating all day (no matter winter as summer), stop snoring, be able to sit in a chair without having to think if it will resist your weight, find clothes your size in any store, etc., etc., that is priceless.

8- Are you generally satisfied with the operation?

Satisfied is to say little. I have recovered a quality of life that I thought was completely lost and always with the security of being able to continue advising me with the clinic team. A few months ago I had a very painful episode of indigestion accumulated during a trip abroad and despite the time difference I found Dr. Ferrer via telephone without the slightest difficulty, which is much appreciated when you are in a bit of a hurry. At various times when I had the slightest problem or doubts about nutrition, the entire medical team was at my disposal and always with the best advice.

9- Would you recommend another person to have surgery?

Absolutely, yes.
Why is that? I don’t know.
Of course I recommend it. The professionalism of Dr. Ferrer and his entire team overcome all the fears that the patient may have and the results are so evident that they get an extra motivation to continue.
All patients I suppose we have the same or very similar fears… it helped me a lot to be able to talk to people already operated (or now through the Facebook group). It is clear that the operation is only the beginning, but to see others who have gone through the same thing and to know that the clinic staff is always there is very comforting.

10- Other comments if desired.

I remember that all the forecasts that Dr. Ferrer made to me before the operation were 100% fulfilled. “We’ll operate on October 2nd (Monday). On Wednesday you will be discharged from hospital and on Friday, after passing through the clinic, you will be able to go home.
And so it was. They operated on me in the afternoon shift and at night I was able to walk and drink something. The next day I was able to take several walks around the hospital… when I was in the clinic that Friday to be discharged there were quite a few people in the waiting room, all of them with a tremendous smile on their faces and so I let the doctor know when I came to his office: “your work is incredible… a battalion of happy people is waiting for you”.
It’s about to be a year since the intervention and not even in my best dreams could I think that everything would have gone so well. My thanks to Dr. Ferrer and all his team for all their kindness and good work.
